How to make Christmas decorations: 5 easy DIY ideas

DIY Christmas paperchain

When it comes to Christmas in July you might not want to get all of the usual decorations out, no matter how wonderful they are. Especially if it means crawling into loft spaces, dragging out storage bags and getting scratched by tree spikes!

If you're looking to go a little more low key for your Christmas in July celebrations, why not try some of these DIY ideas to brighten up your space without breaking the budget (or your Christmas spirit!).

1. Sweater snowmen

Add some Joy to your front door, fire place or tablescape with these cuties from DIY Beautify. Made using recycled old jumpers or socks and rice, they are super simple and fun to do - the kids can even help out with these. Watch out though, they're so addictive you'll have a whole snowman family on your hands!

2. Paper chains and snowflakes

All you need for these traditional decorations is paper, scissors and tape. You can use white, coloured or recycled newspaper - whatever you have to hand. Check out our video to see how we made ours.

3. Mini claypot gingerbread men

For something the kids will truly love, Crafty Morning's claypot creations are absolutely the sweetest. You can get the mini flower pots at most craft stores or even Kmart and Michelle even has other designs, including snowmen for more decoration ideas.

4. Orange and pine cone garland

If you prefer to keep things natural, this garland is for you. Made from foraged pine cones and dried oranges, it's not only simple to make but smells beautiful too! Follow our video to see how we made ours or gather your own garden goodies and use your imagination to build a garland to suit your style.

5. Carboard Christmas trees

If you don't want to mess about putting up the Christmas tree, there are plenty of simple options out there, including an oversized indoor plant! But, personally we love these easy cardboard trees on the Lovely Indeed blog. Put those empty Amazon boxes to good use and dress them up or down as you like. Make them ahead of your Christmas in July party and then put the kids to work painting them as a fun activity too.
