Classic mulled wine recipe

This classic mulled wine recipe is Polly's perfect winter warmer. Christmas in July is a great time to cook up a batch and get cosy by the fire.

Ingredients

  • Cloves (approx. 10)
  • One mandarin (sliced)
  • Two cinnamon sticks
  • Three star anise
  • Half tsp of ground nutmeg
  • Quarter cup of caster sugar
  • Two shots of brandy (optional)
  • One bottle of red wine

Method

  1. Stick cloves into the mandarin slices and place in a slow cooker or crock pot.
  2. Add the mulled spices (cinnamon, star anise and nutmeg) to the pot.
  3. Add the sugar and brandy and stir all together
  4. Pour in the bottle of red wine and turn to lowest or 'auto' setting
  5. Leave for approx. one hour until hot, but do not let the wine boil, as this will cook off the alcohol.
  6. Ladle into your favourite Christmas mug and garnish with a mandarin slice.
